Founded in 2015 by Keighley Cougars legend Phil Stephenson, Silsden Storm has grown into a proud and thriving rugby league club at the heart of our community. Based at Silsden Park, we are more than just a team, we are a family built on tradition, passion, and local pride.
Our commitment to local supporting local is at the core of everything we do. With the majority of our sponsors coming from Silsden itself, we are proud to strengthen the bonds between our club and the community we represent.
We welcome boys and girls from as young as three years old through our Storm Minis programme, launched in 2019. This initiative has been a huge success, introducing the next generation to rugby league in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment.
Also in 2019, we proudly launched our dedicated girls’ section—the Silsden Stormettes. As the only club in our area with an established girls’ programme, we are leading the way in creating opportunities for young female players. Many talented girls are already making their mark, ensuring a bright future for the Stormettes and for rugby league in Silsden.
At Silsden Storm, we celebrate teamwork, resilience, and community spirit. Whether you’re stepping onto the field for the first time or cheering from the sidelines, you’re part of the Storm family.
Phil Stephenson, a Keighley Cougars legend, founded Silsden Storm in 2015 with a simple but powerful goal: to create a club where his son and his friends could play rugby league. On the pitch, Phil was known for his uncompromising style of play tough, fearless, and relentless. Off the pitch, however, he was a gentle giant. His warmth, humility, and ability to make every individual feel valued left a lasting impression on all who met him.
As a coach, he poured his heart into developing young talent, nurturing not just players but people.
Phil’s passion for the club was boundless. In 2017, he expanded the Storm by adding a second team, sparking a period of growth and excitement. That same year, Phil was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). True to his character, he met the diagnosis with courage and determination. He continued to coach and lead, pushing the club forward with unwavering commitment.
By 2018, Phil’s physical condition had deteriorated, and he and his wife Karen made the difficult decision to step back, entrusting a new committee to carry the club forward.
In 2019, honouring Phil’s vision, the club expanded further, introducing new junior teams, launching the Minis programme, and establishing a girls’ section. Phil and Karen remained deeply connected, always watching with pride as the club flourished.
On 28th September 2019, Phil sadly passed away after his battle with MND. His loss was deeply felt across the local rugby community, from Silsden Storm to the Keighley Cougars. Yet, in a moment of bittersweet poignancy, that very morning Silsden Storm won its first-ever league title a fitting tribute to the man who started it all.
Today, Phil’s silhouette is proudly worn on every playing kit, a constant reminder of his legacy.
